Prior to joining Staffeld Engineering Services, Doug was a Senior Scientist/Consulting Engineer for LyondellBasell, a global chemical and polyolefins manufacturer.

With LyondellBasell and its predecessor companies, Doug did extensive modeling of the Spheripol and Spherizone processes for polypropylene. From this work, he developed a dynamic simulation for each process which he used to develop several model-based advanced regulatory controls. All of these controls were successfully implemented with manufacturing, and one reduced process variation by more than 50%, cut transition material by 30%, increased prime production by more than 1%, and was awarded U.S. and European patents.

Doug also developed subroutines that model the Spheripol loop and gas-phase reactors for the Honeywell operator training simulator that have been in use by Honeywell since 1997. The ability of the models to be tuned and retuned to match any specific line (and changes in that line) means that most Spheripol operator training simulators remain in use for years after the original project.

Doug is an accomplished public speaker and trainer, and has given training courses in English, Italian, French, and Spanish. In addition, he has given over 30 speeches as a member of Toastmasters International, for which he has also served as a club president and an area governor.

Doug graduated first in his class from the University of Delaware with a B.Ch.E. in chemical engineering, and holds a masters and a doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
